Even if your fruit and vegetables look fresh and clean they can still have the residue of toxic pesticides, fungicides and herbicides used to protect crop growth and enhance storage ability.

Gluten sensitivities, “Leaky gut” syndrome, and GERD (reflux disease) are also less avoidable with the dominance of genetically modified soy and corn in our diet, which provide a pesticide-like effect in our intestines, altering our flora, and damaging our immune systems.

Some of the top offenders for heavy pesticide residue are potatoes, strawberries, apples, snap peas, grapes, celery, spinach, lettuce, sweet bell peppers, cherries, celery, tomatoes and nectarines.

Ways to minimise buying artificially waxed apples.

  • Buy fruits from local markets where apples are grown. There is a high chance that the farmers have not waxed their fruits after harvesting.
  • Shiny is not better in this case. Buy the dull apples. However, this is not a guarantee that they are not waxed, and some apples in season are naturally shiny.
  • Check the label and buy un-waxed apples. Waitrose and Asda sell bags of un-waxed lemons. Ask somebody in the store if in doubt.

How to clean toxic spray and artificial wax off any ‘fresh’ produce.

  • A home-made cleanser recipe is simple: it’s 90% water and 10% white vinegar. Mix it in a large basin or sink so you have enough room to properly soak your fruits and vegetables. Simply let your produce sit in the mix for approximately twenty minutes. Rinse with cold water.
  • Peel fruit if you suspect waxing.
  • It is important to eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, so buy organic where possible.

Each small step in eliminating pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, helps bring you closer to achieving the necessary nutritional balance to keep your body at peak performance.
